A notable landmark was Jast ‘s Tenshitachi no gogo , a precursor to the modern dating simulation. It was also the first to have recognizably modern anime -style artwork: Prior to , girls were generally drawn either as normally proportioned adults or super deformed children. Some games involved elements of force and brutality. These came to national attention in Japan in with the release by dB-soft of , a game where the player takes the role of a rapist. We have often talked about how gamers have never had the chance to play some of the games that are huge over in Japan. One of the biggest hits for the Japanese market is Dating Sims. When I wrote the preview for this game I applauded Ubisoft for taking the risk and letting the gamer decide for once rather than the big shots at the game companies. However, after playing Sprung I really have to wonder if they picked the right one to make as their first one to debut on the DS. Sprung has everything that all the other dating games have it just has a few problems.
You need to do everything exactly right blow one answer and you will need to restart the scene and the biggest problem is the fact the story is pretty boring. Its also a long game and one you won’t be able to sit through at one time and this can cause some problems later on in the other scenes. Now I am not going to ruin the whole story for those who want to play the game.
So here is just a little run down on the games story. You can play as Brett who is in dire need of a real social life.

Posted by Kurt Kalata on September 27, Sprung: Sprung, developed by Guillemot, Inc. These types of games have never caught on in North America for any number of reasons, and Sprung does absolutely nothing to win any points in its favor. The story focuses on a bunch of nitwits who go on vacation to a ski resort to try to get laid. In a rather progressive move, you can choose to be either the guy, Brett, or the girl, Becky.

Plot[ edit ] The basic lore of the series is built around a Queen who fairly and wisely rules a Cosmos. By balancing elemental forces with the help of nine Guardians, she keeps the various planets in her domain stable and her people content. However, the powers of the Queen and the Guardians fade over time, and successors must be appointed. In the first game and its various remakes, the protagonist is a year-old girl named Angelique Limoges who has been chosen by the current Queen and her aide Dia as one of two candidates from the Royal Smallney Girls’ Academy to become the next Queen.
She is transported to the Flying City to begin her final examination. Each of the candidates is given a land to populate. Whoever finishes populating their land first wins and becomes the next Queen. It is done with the help of nine Guardians who use their powers to make the people of the candidate’s land happy, or to devastate their rival’s lands. Along the way, the candidates become friends with the Guardians and can fall in love.
If they choose love, they forfeit their chance to become Queen, but will live happily ever after. The story expands in later titles, but most entries in the series feature one of a succession of girls named Angelique as the protagonist, with ever larger casts of characters. The roster of potential love interests swells to 19 characters in later titles.

This brings up a great question I’m struggling to think of what aspect of Japanese games makes them uncomfortable with FPS too in their face? I have no idea. Mind if I speculate? Personally I believe from the experience of knowing a few Eastern gamers that have floated through the Gamer’s Club I’m part of that Americans, actually western gamers in general, love immersion.
The good ol’ “two hands on the control, giving everything to the game” type of attention. We, myself included, like to see ourselves as part of the game world, rather than as spectators or advisers from outside the screen. Eastern Gamers typically make and play games that are less direct when engaging the “self” of our imaginations, though as we all know they are definitely NOT less difficult. More social situations from a 3rd person standpoint, more planned decision making, less split-second confrontation unless we are talking about startle scenes in a horror game.

Mon, 11 Nov Memories of the Shinsengumi combines standard dating-sim tropes with a captivating setting and fantastic writing to provide an experience that is surprisingly greater than the sum of its parts — even if it may fall far out of the comfort zone of most players. When meek protagonist Chizuru ventures to Kyoto in search of her missing father and immediately witnesses a bloody murder, she soon finds herself the unwilling house guest of the Shinsengumi, an improvised police force comprised entirely of samurai.
Hakuoki is steeped in the rich history of the Japanese feudal era, making for a fascinating premise but immediately feeling somewhat alien to Western audiences. The writing in Hakuoki is exceptional; the plot unfolds at a natural pace, feeling neither forced nor belaboured, whilst the characters are unique and memorable. Each of the main cast is provided with a decent amount of character development, with Chizuru herself proving to be a likeable and interesting protagonist.
