Founded by George Washburn Lyons, the company focused its attentions on building acoustic guitars. Of course, because mandolins, banjos and upright basses were also popular during that time period, Washburn guitars built those as well. Interestingly, because of an influx of African-Americans moving north from the Mississippi Delta region in the ‘s, the Chicago music scene really took off. Delta Blues found Chicago a receptive community to its raw, emotional feel. Washburn’s factory was located near Maxwell Street, where many musicians congregated to jam and hang out. This close proximity allowed Washburn Guitars to really grow, as the company’s luthiers could take guitars to the street and see them in action. It’s like having an open laboratory to see firsthand what effect a design change will have, and then be able to take that information back to the drawing board.
Originally the Epiphone models were made in the same factory as the Gibson guitars, by the same craftspeople using the same materials and often with the same features as Gibson models, but manufacturing of most of the Epiphone instruments was switched to Asia sometime around Today, Gibson primarily uses the Epiphone brand as their high value, lower priced overseas-built alternative to their top tier Gibson USA models. All Epiphone models sold in the United States are subjected to a 15 point inspection process, and are “set up” in the USA by trained Gibson employees at their Nashville facility.
Around , Les Paul, a legendary musician and musical electronics and solidbody guitar pioneer, created one of his early solid bodied guitars after-hours in the Epiphone factory out of a 4X4″ piece of wood.
Very shortly after this Gibson release the Flying V and Explorer. It’s hard to believe to this day that the Flying V and Explorer were released in the late 50’s due to how ahead of their time these models were, marks what could be the most important year ever for Gibson. The 59’ Gibson Les Paul Standard got everything right.
The device allows musicians to bend the pitch of notes or entire chords with their pick hand for various effects. The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch.
The Bigsby vibrato unit is installed on the top of the guitar and works in conjunction with a rocker bridge. The arm of the Bigsby is spring loaded and attached to a pivoting metal bar, around which the strings of the guitar are installed. In the neutral or unused position, the pressure of the spring counterbalances the pull of the strings, resulting in constant pitch when the strings are played.
When the arm of the Bigsby is pushed down towards the top of the guitar, the bridge rocks forward causing the strings to loosen, lowering their pitch.

WHAT IS UP WITH THAT LAWSUIT
But, by the time Kiss began performing shows, in support of their 1st release, Ace was primarily using a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe through a watt Marshall, as he mentioned in the quote above. That first Les Paul was a beautiful Gibson Les Paul Deluxe in a Tobacco Sunburst finish, which Ace used almost exclusively with a couple of other guitars , right up until September of As with any Les Paul Deluxe of the period, this particular guitar would have originally had mini-Humbucker pickups and creme plastics.
By the time Ace acquired it from Manny’s Music, in late , it already had it’s mini-Humbuckers swapped out for a set of full sized Humbuckers. This was a very common practise of guitars players in the early s, who wanted their guitars to look and sound like those of their heros, from the UK, who were typically using the much revered Les Pauls. Ace’s Les Paul Deluxe started it’s life with him, with creme colored plastics and ‘normal-sized’ humbucking pickups with chrome covers.

Kelly Kuoco, the blonde 16yr old girl on the show is incredible who plays Bridget. One of the early shows was one in which she obviously had on a little tiny string thong panty on under her pants. The sides, just strings were clearly visable as they rode her hips as she wore her low-rider jeans. I can only imagine every inch of her under those clothes and what that little thong panty was covering.
I am sure that most men in the world, let alone every teenage boy in the world would love to fuck this little petite sweet sixteen girl. My story goes… Rehearsal has gone well but Bridget, played by Kaley Cuoco is still not confident.

We had a great time walking around 6th street and downtown, and enjoyed poking around the funky shops and restaurants in the South Congress neighborhood. The appraisers at the musical instrument table were very generous with their time, and I really enjoyed their expert opinions and insight on the instruments. The appraisers I spoke with were: In Philladelphia, PS, http: L Ivers “Everyone a Gibsonite” Mandolin Orchestra photo taken for and published in the Gibson catalog, where both of these instruments are pictured being played by my ancestors.
I also brought along some newspaper clips I recently dug up related to my Great Grandfather’s mandolin marketing activities in the teens and twenties. I’ll post some of these clips soon. I’ve had a pretty good idea of the monetary value of these instruments watching similar items over the years on Ebay, and plenty of time logged on to the Mandolin Cafe website classifieds, and Vintage Instrument forum.
The appraisal values were higher than I would have thought, so that was nice. Of course, as these are family heirlooms, and as long as I am looking after them, they will never be sold. I’m just the current caretaker, and get to enjoy playing them and sharing them with others, until eventually my sister’s kids will end up with them. Here’s a few things I learned: The adjustable bridge, on the F4, while not original to this instrument, is in fact an early Gibson adjustable bridge.
